At a Place to Grow daycare we know that little hands are busy hands! Fine motor skills—the ability to use small muscles in the hands and fingers—play a big role in your child’s growth and independence. From zipping up a jacket to holding a crayon, these tiny movements support big milestones.

What Are Fine Motor Skills?

Fine motor skills involve the coordination of small muscles in the hands and wrists. Activities like drawing, building with blocks, or picking up snacks help children strengthen these muscles, improve hand-eye coordination, and prepare for tasks like writing.

How We Help Kids Develop These Skills

In our classrooms, we focus on play-based learning that naturally encourages fine motor development. Some of our favorite activities include:

  • Finger painting and coloring

  • Stringing beads or pasta

  • Using tweezers to pick up things

  • Playing with playdough

  • Puzzles and stacking toys

What You Can Do at Home

You don’t need fancy tools—everyday activities can help! Try:

  • Letting your child help with cooking (stirring, pouring, scooping)

  • Practicing buttoning and zipping clothes

  • Doing simple crafts together

  • Offering toys that involve twisting, turning, or squeezing

Building strong fine motor skills early sets the stage for success in school and beyond.

At A Place to Grow daycare in Bronx, NY we’re here to support every step—big or small!
